Overhead associated to the use of smart pointers

A 15-18% overhead was shown on two profilings (#657 and #698 (closed)) due to the use of smart pointers in the geometry module. The dumb_pointer branch should be faster but has a lot of memory leaks.

Run a dumb_pointer version of C8 to check the performance gain
